abc of mcgb

we are engaged in promoting the very best of british cuisine

The Master Chefs of Great Britain was formed in 1980 to provide a forum for the exchange of culinary ideas and to further the profession through training and guidance to young chefs. In addition, the association seeks to promote all that is best about British cuisine and the produce available in this country to both the chef and the consumer.

The MCGB supports the campaign for healthy eating by encouraging the use of fresh, quality produce in kitchens around the country. Its members are particularly interested in sourcing local ingredients and in supporting small producers.

Over the past few years, MCGB members have sought to reflect the changes in the culinary scene by producing dishes that allow the natural flavours of the ingredients to come to the fore. Sauces are lighter and the use of butter and cream has been significantly lessened in favour of olive oil and herbs.

This emphasis on freshness and quality is highlighted in the cookery books written by MCGB members and the demonstrations organised at members’ restaurants and at retail and trade shows. All these activities are reported in The Master’s Table magazine.

The MCGB recognises that in today’s busy world, many people cannot avoid processed foods that contain salt, sugar, added fat and artificial flavours/colours. However, if by its efforts, more people turn to fresh ingredients and re-discover the joys of cooking on a regular basis then the seeds of change will have been sown.

The Master Chefs of Great Britain is unique amongst chefs’ associations in its desire to create public awareness for its members be they chefs or corporate sponsors.

Our Executive Committee

Our members work at establishments both large and small and throughout the UK.

Some work single-handed, others as part of a large brigade. some regulary produce banquets for 100's of guests, others run a 'one table restaurant'.

All have in common a passion for fine food and service, and the highest level of profesionalism.

Members cannot pay to join, they have to be elected following proposal by at least two referrees.

Member chefs demonstrate at trade and retail shows as well as in-store spreading the word of ‘can cook, will cook’. Cookery demonstrations are designed to be educational showing specific techniques, informative by giving away the professional secrets and, above all, producing dishes that can be tasted then replicated in the restaurant or home.

Contact our Secretary for more information on this and other services that Master Chefs can provide to your college, training school or company.
